Author event with David Sedaris author of Theft by Finding

Parnassus Books is thrilled to present an author event with David Sedaris on Friday, June 9 at 7 pm for his new book, Theft by Finding: Diaries 1977 - 2002. Please read this event listing carefully and in its entirety, as it contains very important information regarding details of the event.

We have sold out of in-store tickets (seated and standing room) for David Sedaris. BUT -- we still encourage you to preorder the book and get your signing line ticket! Anyone with a signing line ticket will be able to enter the store in ordered groups once the speaking event is over (we *estimate* this will begin about 9 p.m.) to have their book signed. These signing line tickets will be issued in groups (kind of like flying on Southwest Airlines). That is, the sooner you pre-order the book and get your signing line ticket, the earlier signing group you'll be in. So go ahead and order your book now!

Seating Tickets: The first 100 tickets for this event will reserve a seat in the store for the reading.

Overflow Tickets: Once the first 100 tickets have been purchased, the next 100 tickets are standing room only. Additionally, each ticket guarantees a spot in the signing line after the reading.

Signing line only tickets: Once we reach capacity in the store, we will begin forming a signing line outside of the store.

A note about seating: Because of our layout and capacity limitations, we can only accommodate 200 people inside the store. We also will not be able to provide chairs for every attendee, and not all parts of the store will have full visibility. However, David Sedaris will be here until EVERYONE in line has a chance to meet him and get a book signed.

Signing line information: Your pre-order will include a signing line ticket that will assign you to a signing line group. Attendees will be admitted to join the signing line based on the group indicated on their ticket. Each ticket admits one person.

Additional information:

David Sedaris will stay and sign for every attendee. For context, our last event with the author went until 1:30am. There are plenty of great restaurants in our plaza. We encourage you to patronize our fellow businesses while you wait for your signing line group to be called.

There is to be no photography, recording, or video for the entire evening, reading or signing.

Please do not ask the author to sign books written by other people.

FAQ

Why not host the reading and signing at a bigger venue? Mr. Sedaris loves doing book signings and readings in bookstores themselves, and for additional contractual reasons this was organized as an in-store event.

Can I listen to the reading if I don't buy a ticket? Due to the capacity of the store space, the reading itself will be limited to the first 200 ticket holders.

When will ticket holders receive their copies of the book? You can pick up your book when it comes out on May 30th.

If I don't buy a ticket, when can I join the signing line? Once ticket holders have gotten their books signed, we'll open up the signing line to all. It's unlikely this will happen before 9pm.

I can't come. Can I order a signed book? YES!

Is Mr. Sedaris really going to stay and sign books for everyone? Yes!

About Theft by Finding

It's no coincidence that the world's best writers tend to keep diaries. If you faithfully record your life in a journal, you're writing every day--and if you write every day, you become a better writer. David Sedaris has kept a diary for forty years. This means that if you've kept a diary for a year of your life or less, Sedaris is at least forty times better at writing than you are.

In his diaries, he's recorded everything that has captured his attention--overheard comments, salacious gossip, soap opera plot twists, secrets confided by total strangers. These observations are the source code for his finest work, and with them he has honed his self-deprecation and learned to craft his cunning, surprising sentences.

Now, for the first time, Sedaris shares his private writings with the world in Theft By Finding: Diaries 1977-2002. This is the first-person account of how a drug-abusing dropout with a weakness for the International House of Pancakes and a chronic inability to hold down a real job became one of the funniest people on the planet.

Most diaries -- even the diaries of great writers -- are impossibly dull, because they generally write about their emotions, or their dreams, or their interior life. Sedaris's diaries are unique because they face outward. He doesn't tell us his feelings about the world, he shows us the world instead, and in so doing he shows us something deeper about himself.

Written with a sharp eye and ear for the bizarre, the beautiful, and the uncomfortable, and with a generosity of spirit that even a misanthropic sense of humor can't fully disguise, Theft By Finding proves that Sedaris is one of our great modern observers. It's a potent reminder that there's no such thing as a boring day--when you're as perceptive and curious as Sedaris, adventure waits around every corner.
