Lorena Hickok — “Hick,” as she’s known to friends — meets Eleanor Roosevelt in 1932 while reporting on Franklin Roosevelt’s first presidential campaign. She and Eleanor come from different worlds: Hick, a respected journalist from poor South Dakota, and Eleanor, a daughter of the old-money Roosevelts.  Their initial difference fade away as their connection deepens into intimacy, and what begins as a powerful passion matures into a life Hick never expected to have. She takes a job in the Roosevelt administration, moves into the White House, where her status as “first Friend” is an open secret, and builds a relationship with Franklin, who she comes to know as a great president as well as a complicated rival and irresistible friend. Through it all, even as Hick’s bond with Eleanor is tested by forces both extraordinary and common, and as she grows as a woman and a writer, she never loses sight of the love of her life.
