Penguins with People Problems waddle into Parnassus Books! Be here as we launch Mary Laura Philpott's new illustrated humor book for grownups, based on the the wildly popular Tumblr, The Random Penguins. Don't miss the hilarious real stories behind the birds, a live penguin-drawing experience, and collectible Penguins with People Problems swag. It's a book signing party like no other, sponsored by Tumblr and featuring a signature cocktail (on ice, natch) mixed up by The Wine Shoppe at Green Hills.
Stress-eating after a breakup? Frustrated by the cost of a good cocktail? Stymied by the weirdness of abstract art? These penguins share your pain.
When Mary Laura Philpott, a writer who lives in Nashville (and just happens to be the social media director and editor of Musing here at Parnassus) heard about the Penguin Random House publishing merger, she -- like a world of book nerds -- wondered what the new company would be called. Book House? Random Books? Penguin House? Stuck on the phrase "random penguin," Philpott started creating little penguin doodles and captioning them in her quirky signature writing style. Thus her Tumblr, The Random Penguins, was born.
So who are these birds? The “random penguins” are a lineup of lovable weirdos. They understand the agony of social awkwardness, the power of the perfect smoky eye, and the arm- (or wing)-flapping terror of having a bee in the car. In fact, these characters get into the same sticky situations we all do. They are Penguins with People Problems.
So meet your favorite new flightless friends. They’re brutally honest (except when they’re lying), comically insecure, and totally relatable.
