Author event with Maile Meloy author of The After-Room

Parnassus Books is thrilled to welcome Maile Meloy as she reads from and signs The After-Room.

It’s 1955, and Benjamin Burrows and Janie Scott are trying to live a safe, normal life in America.  It’s not easy when they have the power to prevent nuclear disaster, and sinister forces are circling.  Soon the advice of a mysterious, unscrupulous magician propels Janie and Benjamin into danger, and toward the land of the dead.  Meanwhile, their friend Jin Lo washes up on a remote island where an American spy is stationed, and finds herself on the trail of a deadly threat in China.  But she’s on the other side of the world - how can Janie and Benjamin reach her?

Maile Meloy grew up in Helena, Montana, and was always a reader. She was an English major in college, and afterward worked as a river ranger in Utah, on a political campaign in Montana, and in a bilingual grade school in Costa Rica.  When she moved to Los Angeles, she first taught swimming lessons and then became a development assistant at Disney Direct-to-Video Animation.  When she’s not writing, she participates in obscure sports and played on the U.S. women’s kayak polo team for four years.  She writes short stories and essays, and has published four award-winning books of fiction for adults.  Her first novel for young readers, the New York Times bestseller The Apothecary, combines historical fiction and fantasy and won the E.B. White Read-Aloud Award and the California Book Awards Gold Medal.

The After-Room is the finale in the trilogy that began with The Apothecary and continued in The Apprentices with Ian Schoenherr’s stunning illustrations throughout.
