Parnassus Books is thrilled to welcome Jennifer Pastiloff, author of On Being Human, in conversation with Mary Laura Philpott.
Jennifer Pastiloff didn’t intend to become a yoga teacher, but now she teaches sold-out workshops and retreats all over the world, from LA to Tuscany. In her moving and profoundly candid memoir, On Being Human: A Memoir of Waking Up, Living Real, and Listening Hard, Pastiloff, creator of the workshop On Being Human and founder of online magazine The Manifest Station, tells her life story, one that is at once captivatingly personal and astonishingly universal.
Pastiloff explores how thirteen years of waitressing taught her to seek out unexpected beauty, how hearing loss taught her to listen fiercely, how being vulnerable allowed her to find love, and how imperfections can lead to a life full of unimagined happiness. She shares the transformative experiences and challenges that have shaped her into the resilient, passionate woman she is today, including losing her father at an early age, battling an eating disorder and depression, reluctantly accepting her hearing loss, discovering the healing power of yoga, writing, and human connection, and learning to believe in herself and her ability to help others.
Through her journey, Pastiloff conveys a powerful experience that most of us are missing in our lives: being heard and being told “I got you,” a sentiment that guides every facet of her work and radiates from the communities she creates, both in-person and online. Her bold yet relatable ideas have won her a loyal social media following and thousands of devotees who often travel across the globe to attend her workshops and retreats. Readers of ON BEING HUMAN, whether they are already familiar with Pastiloff or finding her for the first time, will find solace, guidance, hope, and inspiration in abundance in the pages of this remarkable memoir.
Exuberant, beautifully written, and extraordinarily brave, ON BEING HUMAN is a celebration of love, happiness and self-realization over darkness and doubt
