In1941with the world at war, and most able-bodied American men fighting overseas, professional baseball was in danger of becoming a quaint relic—until women stepped up to the plate. The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (1943–1954) was the first and only league of its kind. The AAGPBL was the setting for the classic 1992 film A League of Their Own, but in The Incredible Women of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League the story is told by those who knew it best: the players! Author/artist Anika Orrock collects and illustrates a variety of funny, charming, wince-worthy, and powerful vignettes from the players themselves about their experiences: the thrill of discovering other women who had honed their skills on neighborhood lots, the challenge of balancing grace and beauty with athleticism, the pressure to prove they could play just as hard as the men even when exhausted or injured. These vibrantly illustrated stories of grit and perseverance—interwoven with player statistics, historical beats, headlines, and more—prove that the players of the AAGPBL were not only amazing then, but continue to inspire the women and girls of today.
