Parnassus Books welcomes Carolyn and Clark Baker as they sign Carolyn’s book Work, Play, Pray Hard.
What does it take to become a visionary leader? Work, Play, Pray Hard presents concrete advice housed in inspired stories that are humorous, poignant and achievable.
Since 2013, Carolyn has been compiling stories and lessons from her husband, as well as from his friends and employees to create this inspirational leadership book. Proceeds from Work, Play, Pray Hard will be given to two YMCA camps: Widjiwagan in Nashville and Camp Cullen in Houston.
Carolyn Baker was an educator for more than twenty-five years. Upon completion of her undergraduate degree at Longwood University in Virginia, she taught in Indiana, Florida, Tennessee, and Texas. Carolyn went on to earn a doctorate in education from Vanderbilt University. She founded the Nashville Catholic Middle School Forensic League and coached the forensic team at Overbrook School for 14 years. She has been an adjunct instructor at Aquinas College in Nashville, the University of St. Thomas and Springfield College in Houston, Texas. Carolyn became interested in writing about leadership skills after reflecting on her husband’s successful 50 year career. She has two daughters and three grandchildren and currently lives in Nashville with her husband, Clark. They have been married for 44 years.
Clark Baker is one of the most successful leaders in the realm of nonprofits. In his
50-year- career with the YMCA he raised more than $500 million in philanthropic support, helped design creative and innovative programs that benefitted every community where he was CEO, and greatly expanded Y facilities which enriched the lives of families. A collection of rich stories from Clark’s career imparts lessons on what it takes to be a successful leader. Among the compilation are narratives from people who have experienced Clark in the workplace. The stories tell tangible ways to hone your leadership skills—skills that include being empathetic with staff and board members, being communicative, effectively hiring talented staff, being attentive to detail, and having fun along the way.
Work, Play Pray Hard is a testament to the fact that anyone who desires can become a effective visionary leader.
